NEW UPDATE:
From Lou Papalas (BarbraNews.com visitor:)
Hi fellow Barbra
buddies,
I have taken it upon myself to act as host
for the many Barbra fans who will be attending the June 5, 2004
Julien Entertainment sale of Barbra's beautiful gowns, costumes,
selected home furnishings and more. I am fortunate enough to have
been consulting with Darren Julien's staff and somewhat assisting
them in their research as they prepare the auction catalog .
Trust me...this beautiful catalog will be a collector's item in
and of itself. Orders can be placed in advance on ebay or
through
www.julienentertainment.com.
There is a lot of interest in this event. The ebay catalog
listings already have over 700 hits!
I have arranged
for a block of discounted rooms to be set aside at the Valadon
Hotel in West Hollywood. It is merely three minutes from the
Pacific Design Center. Specially negotiated room rates for the
Streisand Auction attendees are as follows:
$ 99 for a demi-suite
$110 for a junior
suite
Junior suite will be furnished with two queen beds.
$129 for an
executive suite
$149 for a
one-bedroom suite with kitchen SOLD OUT
---Quoted rates are for two people per room.
---There is a four person limit per room.
---$15 charge for third and the fourth person in the
room per night!
---The executive suite has a kitchenette.
---All prices will be adjusted 14% for taxes, etc.
---Do not use the Valadon Hotel website to make reservations as it
reflects the rooms as sold out in order to block the rooms for us
at the special discounted rates. To get the discounted rates, you
will need to use either of their reservation numbers . Call direct
at 310-967-6340 or toll free at 1-800-835-7997.
This charming and quaint European-type hotel
not only has beautiful accommodations, but it is also the closest
hotel to the Pacific Design Center. You can walk! It is only a
few blocks away from the West Hollywood night life and fine
restaurants (you can walk also) and a few minutes cab ride to
Beverly Hills. The Valadon is offering a reduced parking rate of
$10.00 per day with unlimited "in and out" privileges. They tout
their parking rate and privileges as competitive advantages. (By
the way...just try to find a parking place in West Hollywood on a
Friday or Saturday night.)
Because of the
interest in this event,
I advise you to secure your
reservations at the Valadon as soon as possible. When
you call or write for reservations, make sure that you
reference the Barbra Streisand Auction in order to get the special
rates. You can view the Valadon's website at
WWW.valadonhotel.com. You
may reserve your room by calling their direct reservation line
at 310-967-6340. DO NOT BOOK ON WEBSITE
Please note that although the auction will be
June 5, I suggest that you come at least a day or two earlier and
stay at least one day later. Plan on a June 7or a late June 6
departure so as to be able to enjoy some of the events surrounding
the auction that are in the planning stages at this time. More
info will be distributed soon, and depending on interest, several
alternatives may be planned .At the present time you can count
on the following:
- A Friday afternoon registration/cocktail
reception or luncheon at the Pacific Design Center. This will
include a complimentary group tour of the Annie Liebovitz
photography exhibit in the Pacific Design Center on Friday.
- A mini reunion of sorts. More details
and costs will be forthcoming. Anyone who wants to lend a hand or
anyone with a great idea which is fairly simple to arrange, please
contact me directly at
Lpapalas@peoplepc.com.
- A memorabilia show and sale, most likely
on Friday afternoon and/or Sunday morning. Attendee interest and
collector/exhibitor participation will determine the number of
offerings. Please contact me if you are interested in exhibiting
and advise me of your space requirements. Approvals will be
on space-available, first- come/first-served priority basis.
- A special Saturday evening event. (I am
presently in negotiations with a Las Vegas impersonator).
Nothing is FIRM at this point.
An event may also be planned for Sunday
evening. I will soon be distributing an interest survey as well
as requesting ideas. Please direct any comments or questions
directly to me during the planning stages. I may not answer each
on an individual basis, but I will publish periodic updates as the
planning continues. More to come...stay tuned.
As promised, here

Washington
Press Correspondents Dinner with JFK (1962)
–
In May
of 1962 Barbra was invited to sing at the Washington Press
Correspondents Dinner attended by President J ohn
F. Kennedy. During the evening she met the president. She wore this
custom made dress. It features a satin shell with a wool jersey
over skirt and bodice. It features short cuffed sleeves, scoop neck
and empire waist. It is cleverly and simply decorated with buttons
in ascending size down the front of the gown, with corresponding
faux button holes. There is a zipper in back. The gown is in
excellent condition with just two tiny holes in the wool on the
upper back and one at the lower front. This is a very unique and
distinguished piece.
SPECTACULAR
BOB MACKIE GOWN AND CAPE – Here is a
stunning ensemble made for events. Barbra has been photographed
with Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Johnny Mathis
wearing this custom Bob Mackie ball gown. Constructed like an opera
costume, there are four thick under-layers of tulle and organdy
trimmed with lace. The shell of the skirt, bodice and cape are gold
taffeta. There are inset overlays down the front of the skirt, on
the back and at middle of bodice front with are decorated in a vine
like design made up of gold sequins, bugle beads, rhinestones and
ending in bugle bead fringe. The dress is short sleeved with fringe
at cuffs. The shoulders of the asymmetrical cape are also beaded the
same. The dress has a back zipper and hook and eye closures. It has
the Bob Mackie label. It is in excellent condition.
SCASSI
GOWN FOR HELLO DOLLY PREMIER AND ACADEMY AWAR D
TO JOHN WAYNE – On Dec. 17, 1969
“Hello Dolly” premiered and Barbra attended with co-star Louis
Armstrong. A few months later she was the presenter of the Best
Actor Oscar to John Wayne on the annual Academy Award telecast. For
both events, she wore this custom Arnold Scassi gown. The empire
waist, short sleeve full length heavy silk gown is artfully
decorated with hand crafted “buttons” made up of sequins, beads and
rhinestones. The V neck line features rhinestones along the entire
edge. The dress has a back zipper. The designers label is present.
It is in excellent condition.
 MY
NAME IS BARBRA TV Special Gown (1965 CBS)
- Blue wool and silk sailor dress worn throughout
much of Barbra’s first television special. The custom made dress is
a blue wool shell with blue silk chiffon over-lay, white linen cuffs
and collar trimmed in blue ribbon and red bow under the collar, tied
at bodice which streams down the front of the dress. The costume is
not labeled. There is make-up staining inside the back of the
collar. The dress is in stunning condition. This is a brilliant
and “iconic” look of the early Barbra Streisand.
FUNNY GIRL Broa dway
Theatrical Costume Gown for “People” (1964)
– Here is the original gown Barbra Streisand wore to introduce a
song forever identified with her, “People.” This gown was worn when
she introduced the song live to Broadway audiences during the
original 1964 run of the play at the Broadway Winter Garden theatre.
Her image in this costume was used heavily in publicity for the play
and featured on the cover of Playbill for a time during the run. The
brilliant film and stage costume designer Irene Sharaff, who was
nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won five during her career,
created the costumes for both the stage and film versions of FUNNY
GIRL. This gown of the W orld
War I period features a pleated silk chiffon underskirt decorated
with bugle beads. The outer shell is satin with a chiffon overlay.
There is a bow at knee height which features an attached “brooch”
encrusted with rhinestones at center. The skirt and waist band are
gathered. The bodice treatment continues the underskirt motif of
bugle beaded chiffon over satin with rhinestone accents. The sides
of the bodice and the sleeves are decorated with flat rhinestones
and “grape” style tassels made up of beads and sequins. The costume
is “theatrically” constructed and features industrial hook and eye
and zipper in back. There are no labels. Overall brilliant
condition with a few repairs to the chiffon overlay.
THE
WAY WE WERE (1973 Columbia), VINTAGE STYLE
OVERCOAT
-
Patterned wool overcoat with a 1940’s flair worn for the Oscar
nominated role of Katie Morosky Gardner. The coat, designed by three
time Academy Award winner Dorothy Jeakins and Moss Mabry is fully
lined, the bodice is pleated, there is one hook and eye closure at
the waist, a large button at the collar and it comes with a leather
sash. There are no labels. The coat is in superb condition.
STAR
IS BORN (1976 Warner Bros.), RECORD ALBUM Cover Superman Shirt-
Here is the famous shirt which helped make Barbra Streisand a sex
symbol of the late 1970’s. Inspired by a scene from A STAR IS BORN,
Barbra wore this shirt with shorts, socks and sneakers for the cover
of her 1977 record album “Streisand Superman.” This so inspired the
people at Playboy Magazine, who were about to do an interview with
her. For her Playboy photo session, Barbra wore a T- shirt and
shorts, but removed her socks and sneakers. The custom athletic
shirt is sleeveless and features the red and yellow “Superman”
insignia. It is purposely stained at the shoulders and a bit on the
lower front. It is in excellent condition.
ON
A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER (1970 Paramount) -
Black Velvet Period Gown and Hat by Cecil Beaton-

Some of
the most stunning costuming for film musicals was achieved for this
Vincent Minnelli directed extravaganza. ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE
FOREVER was one of the last films in the classic film musical genre.
One of Cecil Beaton’s most beautiful creations was this hat and
gown. The dress is full length, made of black silk velvet with
layers of organdy trim at the wrists, insets on the sleeves and at
the neck. The neck and bodice piece is attached and features cream
colored velvet bow with an attached cameo pin edged with
rhinestones. There is beaded fringe at each sleeve inset made up of
black
jet
beads. The dress is empire style and has a high collar. It has hook
and eye closures at the wrists and neck and a zipper up the back.
The studio label inside the gown reads “Barbra Streisand (written in
indelible ink), Paramount.” Additionally, the gown comes with its’
spectacular hat. It is a period style high picture hat with a very
large brim. It is black silk velvet, lined in satin. It is adorned
with a cream colored velvet ribbon and organdy and satin bow and
flower motif at the center front of the hat. The hat also features a
Paramount label and in indelible ink is written “Streisand, USA.”
Worn in one of the Dickensian period flashback sequences of the film
in which the character Daisy Gamble recounts a previous life when
she was Melinda Tentrees. The condition is superb.
WHAT’S
UP DOC? (1970 Warner Bros) ARMAND OF BEVERLY HILLS WOOL CAP-

This
cap was worn throughout much of the classic screwball type comedy.
It is the most representative costume of Barbra Streisand’s
character from this film. The custom made cap features the ARMAND
label and is finished inside the brim with ribbon and lace. Stills
or Barbra wearing this hat were used prominently in the promotion of
this film, including on the original release poster art. Condition
is superb.
 “THE
CONCERT” MGM GRAND, LAS VEGAS 1994 –
For the triumphal 1994 concert tour, Donna Karan designed several
beautiful gowns and costumes for Barbra’s stage appearances. This
is a full length sleeveless evening gown. It consists of a cream
silk under dress pleated at the bottom and a black velvet over
dress, open down the front and edged with rhinestones. It has an
empire waist and is gathered at the bodice. There is a built in
undergarment and stays in the bodice. The inner garment has hook and
eye closures and the dress zips up the back. There is no label. This
dress worn by Barbra was utilized heavily in the promotion of this
concert and appears on the video and DVD box covers.
